Although the bite remained challenging throughout the season, there were still some beautiful fish brought in. We’d like to especially thank our staff for their hard work and dedication during the cold months.

We thought this picture was a great way to end the ice fishing season. It was submitted by Michelle Pouliot Schaefers. Her kids decided to take a break from fishing on 3/29/13 to build snowmen on the ice. Take note of their walleye hats and fishing pole arms!

The winter months brought some ups and downs with fishing, but things have been looking up the past few weeks. The bite seems to be improving and we’re seeing beautiful fish coming in. Although it might take a few days, we’re seeing limits being brought home. Steve Klein of St. Cloud, Minnesota, fished at Rocky Point last Thursday through Saturday. On his first day, he caught and released a 27″ walleye. Two hours later, he caught and released a 23″ in walleye. He also brought in a 14″ perch their last day. The Wienen group visited Rocky Point on March 14 & 15. They had six people in their group and ended up going home with six limits.

Rocky Point has extended our ice fishing season and will be open April 1-6. We will rent cabins without fishing services if you choose that option. Call us at 1-800-535-7585 to book your last fishing trip of the season!

The South Shore on Lake of the Woods near Rocky Point continues to have up and down fishing. Weather patterns and snow depths could be determining factors on see-saw results of the fishing day. It has been common for guests to tell us that fishing is strong one day for a period of time and the next day the bite subsides. The Mike Wienen group of the Duluth area did have success on their trip. With six people fishing, they were able to secure six limits in a day and a half and also released 4 slot fish over 20 inches. They caught several small fish, but action was continuous. They fished the Gull Rock Reef area. So, there are some success stories…but if you enjoyed your stay and had fun along the way, that is a success story for us, too!

Although reports of slow fishing seem to be prevalent on Lake of the Woods, things have started to perk up around the Rocky Point area. Our houses are in 29-31 ft. of water and the ice conditions are excellent where we are fishing. Fat head chubs are working the best right now. Red, gold and pinks are the top color choices. Our guides continue to move houses trying to find the better bite. Electronics are proving to be a valuable tool for many of our guests, so don’t forget to pack them for your fishing trip.

12 Mile Reef offered the Pilacinski group some of the best fishing they’ve had here in 20 years. The group was on 12 Mile Reef fishing at approximately 29-30 feet. They were able to secure a limit; although that limit was mostly saugers, the size of the saugers was impressive. They were elated about the northern pike fishing as well, catching seven of them during their stay. Their largest pike measured in at 39 inches. Dave Pilacinski also found that a gold Swedish Pimple with a touch of orange on it was the key to his success.

Fishing at Rocky Point has been fair. Guides are moving houses each day to try to stay on top of the fish. Patience and jigging are the keys to success. The tackle that seems to work the best are the pieces that rattle when it moves. Their are lots of smaller fish, right on the bottom. The Vexilar is looking like an essential piece of equipment this year.

The Eberspacher group recently stayed in one of our overnight fish houses and said their key to success was to jig the line from bottom back up to 8 ft. off the bottom, then set it back down to about 2-4 ft. off the bottom. Rick Eberspacher had success with the Rattl’ N Flyer jigs that were tipped off with a minnow head. Their group was in 29 ft. of water. They caught some nice slot fish at 23, 20 and 19 inches and a total of 17 saugers along with perch, walleye and northern.

Keep jigging!

Dennis Scepaniak caught this lake trout on Sunday, January 20, 2013, in front of Rocky Point. Jack Arnesen, native to Lake of the Woods, said this is only the third lake trout he’s seen at Rocky Point in his lifetime.

The lake trout is a freshwater char living mainly in lakes in northern North America. Other names for it include mackinaw, lake char (or charr), touladi, togue, and grey trout. In Lake Superior, it can also be known as siscowet, paperbelly and lean. The lake trout is prized both as a game fish and as a food fish. Lake trout are the largest of the charrs; the record weighed almost 46.3 kilograms (102 lb) (netted), and 15– to 40-pound fish are not uncommon. The largest caught on a rod and reel was 72 pounds (33 kg), caught in Great Bear Lake.
